#Art Helps #Children Learn To Be Kind To #Animals

Ventura County Star April 23, 2012

What happens when children, animals and art come together? You get a joyous display of wide-eyed self-expression and compassion, along with a never-ending string of ‘teachable moments’. “Be Kind to Animals Day” is that venue, when Focus on the Masters Learning to See Youth Outreach and the Humane Society of Ventura County join forces on Saturday, May 5th from 11:00-3:00 at the shelter in Ojai. This day will feature an artist’s reception and exhibit with art from Elmhurst Elementary students who took part in Learning to See Youth Outreach art classes.

Families will learn about respect for wild animals and the responsibilities of owning a pet through our special visitors: a blue-tongued skink, corn snake, tree frog, and tortoise from the shelter’s humane education programs, a golden eagle from the Ojai Raptor Center, and rabbits from Ventura County Animal Services Bunny Brigade. Of course, the adoptable dogs and cats will all be excited to say ‘hi’ to everyone, too. Animal-related arts and crafts will round out the “Be Kind” experience.

As always, the dogs and cats at the shelter appreciate donations of old towels and blankets to help keep them comfortable while they wait for their forever families. Old t-shirts may also be donated to help us make dog leashes and toys.

For more information, call the Learning to See Art Coordinator and Humane Society Educator, Aimee French at (805) 650-6152.
