Sharbat Gula was only 12 years old when photographer Steve McCurry captured the young refugee in Pakistan during the 1984 Soviet occupation. A year later, National Geographic Magazine made the haunting shot its June cover.


“Afghan Girl” — Now

Seventeen years later, Sharbat Gula and her photographer met again. Gula is in her late twenties and lives in the mountains near Tora Bora with her husband and her three children. When asked if she’s ever felt safe, she to Nat Geo, “No. But life under the Taliban was better. At least there was peace and order.”
